Star Wars: The Phantom Edit is a fan-edited version of the film Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. The edit was created by film editor Mike J. Nichols in 2000 and aimed to improve on the original by removing some of the more criticized elements, such as Jar Jar Binks and excessive politics. The edit also rearranged scenes and tightened the pacing, making for a more satisfying viewing experience. However, the edit was not endorsed by Lucasfilm or George Lucas and was seen as an infringement on copyright laws. Despite this, the Phantom Edit gained a cult following and paved the way for fan-edits to become a popular trend in the years that followed.
